Fresh photos with the bomb lighting ✨

Hello again & happy Friday! Over the last couple of years I’ve seen some really exciting momentum in my business & so many business concepts finally “clicked” for me. Now, part of this I attribute to trial and error and showing up every day ready to learn. However, along the way I have read some extremely useful business books & I’d love to share them with you today! I try to read one business book every other month these days & that’s been an invaluable practice for my business. Continual learning has really become a core value of my business because things change so quickly these days & we can literally never know all the things! Here are some of the best books for business that I’ve read & would highly recommend to you!

Business Books You Have to Read

Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen

This book is my NUMBER ONE recommendation to anyone running a business! After reading this book by Donald Miller, I literally added an entire new page on my website to clarify the message I was putting out into the world & it’s been a game changer! My favorite part of the book is when he talks about how to position your voice with your audience so that what you’re saying compels your ideal clients. Go buy this book now if you haven’t read it!

Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All

Co-Written by brothers Tom & David Kelley who founded the incredible design firm IDEO where they use creativity to solve major human problems and create positive impact for the world. Although this isn’t technically a business book, if you’re offer a creative service to clients like I do, you’re always trying to solve your client’s biggest problems and improve their experience. The problem is, doing that sometimes takes big risks and can be scary! This book dials down on basically how to think creatively and make bold, creative decisions.

Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business

I’ll be honest – I’m actually only about halfway done with this book, but I HAVE to include it in this list because it’s already that good! As I look into the future of Cheers Babe Photo, I’m super excited to grow my team & this book talks all about how to do that well — all the way from how to hire & what to look for through day-to-day systems to put in place that both motivate your team and grow your business. Definitely pick up this book if you’re thinking about hiring!

This Is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn to See

First of all, Seth Godin is like a business genius and has written many books that are worth reading. Most recently I read his book This is Marketing which talks both about how you should be approaching you marketing today as well as how you shouldn’t be, which is so useful! My favorite line in the whole book is about realizing that you’re not a good fit for every client and that is totally okay! — “When we find the empathy to say, “I’m sorry, this isn’t for you, here’s the phone number of my competitor,” then we also find the freedom to do work that matters.” – S.Godin

The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery

While obviously this isn’t actually a business book but a book about the enneagram, I’m including it in my business books list because as I dive deeper into the psychology tool that is the Enneagram typing system, the more empathy I gain for my couples as well as potential clients who end up going with someone else. If you’ve heard about the enneagram (yes, I know it’s trendy right now, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t great!), this book is a really great place to start & even determine your dominant type!

WorkParty: How to Create & Cultivate the Career of Your Dreams

Part business book & part-memoir by Jaclyn Johnson, the founder of ultra successful Create & Cultivate is a really fun & quick read. Hear her story, her mistakes, her triumphs and best advice for women running their own business today while remaining a healthy & taking care of yourself too!

What should I read next, babe?

My Favorite Business Books

I get so many questions about the gear I use & what my absolute go-to lenses are! Below you’ll find a comprehensive list of my professional photography gear, what my favorites are and how I use each piece.

Essential Gear / My Absolute Go-To’s

I have 2 Canon DSLR bodies & I like to use them simultaneously so that I can have 2 totally different lenses on and switch between the two quickly. I currently use the Canon 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body)& will be upgrading soon to the Mark IV or whatever Canon releases next!

Canon 50mm f/1.2 L Lens [aka my baby!]

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L [love this lens]– know that Canon recently released a new version of this one –35mm f/1.4L II

My Favorite Memory Cards [write speed is so fast on these, I love them!]

Go buy this Memory Card Case right now! They have versions that are all CF and ones that are all SD depending on what you like to use, but these babies keep me so organized & they are basically indestructible. To make sure I’m only pulling the cards I haven’t shot on, I have a simple system where I flip the card backwards in the case when it’s full so I have a clear visual cue (you can see that in the photo above). Works like a charm!

Canon 85mm f1.2L Lens– gorgeous for portraits & really useful for the ceremony

Etsy leather harness dual camera system [OBSESSED with these! They are similar to the popular brand name ones, but mine has never failed on me and I like that the straps are a little narrower. They fit my frame much better, plus you get to choose from so many colors & customizations!]

Non-Essential Faves

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro Lens [my newest pal for ring shots!]

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art Lens [awesome for HUGE group shots!]

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L Lens [I rarely use this these days, but it was my FIRST non-kit lens and it was the perfect first lens purchase & super helpful if you plan on doing a lot of second shooting!]

3 Canon 580ex II Speedlites [these have been discontinued, so get the new 600ex II‘s!]

Life-Changing Software

I’ve used Honeybook as my CRM (customer relationship management) software for years and it completely changed how I run my business! I can keep inquiries, proposals, contracts and payments all in one convenient place. Use THIS REFERRAL LINK to get 50% off your first year!

Babes, meet Caitlin! She and I had so much fun running around Pac Heights and Sutro Baths for her entrepreneur session. Caitlin is an AMAZING, uber talented wedding photographer based in Napa Valley – you have to check out her work! When I asked her to describe what her photography business is all about the first word of of her mouth was hospitality. How good is that!? This gal loves to care for her clients well and shows up to serve. I love her heart for her couples! She drinks an iced tea every day – so of course we made sure to capture that so she can share it with her followers. She also loves the ocean and squishing her toes in the sand, so we made sure to hit up the beach at Sutro Baths for some sand & sun. I love those little things about my clients that make them unique!

If you are an entrepreneur or business owner (especially a female one 💪!) and you keep telling yourself, “I need photos for social so bad!”, you are right & I encourage you to book a session! I can’t tell you the difference it’s made in my own business to put myself out there & let people see the face that’s usually behind the camera. It’ll help people get to know you, remember you & want to do business with you. I love doing these kind of sessions, so hit a sista up, anytime. 🙂

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Yellow Conference in Downtown Los Angeles. Yellow Co. describes the conference as “a gathering of creative women who are making an impact and using their gifts, skills and talents to serve the greater good. The ones who are willing to roll up their sleeves, step out in courage, and use their creativity for good”. The speakers were so inspiring to me, listening to how they’ve used their creativity, taken ownership of their gifts and calling and impacted lives around them.

The conference was extra fun for me because I went with my gal pals, Lindsay & Praise! We arrived a couple days earlier, hung out in Venice Beach and spent an afternoon on the Swan paddle boats in Echo Park – a highlight for me, I must say 😂. I’ll bring you along on those fun moments below & also share a few of my favorite take-away quotes from the Yellow Conference that I managed to scribble down!

I even ran into an old friend, Meredith! Love with these things happen 🙂

The pic below is a welcome from the Yellow Conference founder, Joanna Waterfall, who has put this conference on for the last 5 years! Such a champ.

An extra fun fact: The conference was held at the venue I was married at! So fun to go back and explore Hudson Loft & all of it’s new & beautiful additions to the space!

Also, DTLA has changed so much in the last 2 years! I was floored by how many new skyscrapers were being built.

If you’re a creative entrepreneur, you likely already know who Natalie Franke is. She is the co-founder of The Rising Tide Society and the Head of Community at Honeybook. Natalie is a huge source of encouragement and positivity to myself personally and to literally thousands of other entrepreneurs! Go follow her journey and make sure to check out the blog she wrote recently about her story of courage, resilience & vulnerability. It’s so inspiring and such a good reminder for those days that we just get a little too caught up in our biz.

Natalie & I ran around the Mission District in SF a few weeks ago to get some fun, colorful content for her social channels! If you are an entrepreneur or business owner and you keep telling yourself, “I need photos for social so bad!”, you are right & I encourage you to book a session! I can’t tell you the difference it’s made in my own business to put myself out there & let people see the face that’s usually behind the camera. I had so much fun roaming around Pacific Heights with fellow photographer, Molly Kate, for her headshot session! She is quite literally a comedian and had me laughing the entire time. In her time as a theater performer, she learned the art of putting yourself out there with a ton of courage, personality and of course a sense of humor & that’s what her identity as a photographer centers on – getting to capture those very traits in her clients.

Enjoy these goofy and gorgeous images of the boss babe that is, Molly Kate!
