Business

Three things I wished I knew in 2019:

How to say “NO” to projects I wasn’t interested in

Outsourcing is life-changing

How much I LOVE to read & how big of an impact biz books can make on your business

I talked through ALL of these things as I learned these lessons with my #bizbestie (shoutout Christa!) during 2019 & it helped transform my business — now we want to bring that relational transformation to YOU. 🤝 We invite YOU to be our newest Biz Bestie! Watch the video today as I describe just how much impact these 3 lessons made on my business last year.

Biz Bestie: 3 Things I Wish I Knew in 2019

Business

I cannot even begin to describe what a joy it has been to grow this business from the ground up. It’s such a privilege to get to do something I love so dearly for work! Today, I’m excited to announce that Cheers Babe is growing again! Last year we grew our team with the additions of Chris and Christa – you can read those stories by clicking their names. This year, we are looking for an associate wedding photographer located in the Bay Area who will be the perfect fit for the CBP team.

This biz spent the last 3 years in the Bay Area and grew an amazing crew of supporters and couples – who are still referring us even though we’re based in LA again! I’ll still be taking on some Bay Area weddings myself, but it’s not wise for me to fly up to SF every weekend! This is where you could come in!

Do you think you might be a perfect fit?

If you are interested in this position, or if you have a friend that would be interested, please thoroughly read the guidelines below. The link to apply can be found at the bottom of this blogpost!

All Applications are due no later than January 31st, 2020.

We cannot wait to hear from you!

-You’ve been working as a wedding photographer for a bit, but are struggling with the business side of the work

-You’re overwhelmed with the day-to-day tasks of running a business

-You’ve experienced a recent lifestyle change (maybe you had a baby!) and feel like you’re barely staying afloat when it comes to running your business

-You may have recently graduated & are looking for even more experience

What we are looking for:

– Lives in the San Francisco Bay Area

– Someone who has a natural eye, gift, some experience and passion for wedding photography

– Someone who is organized

– A great work ethic is super important to us, as well as someone who loves to learn, can work and problem solve independently, is known for their hospitality and is very responsible

– Someone with excellent people skills and the ability to put people at ease

– A working knowledge of Canon DSLR camera equipment & shooting in manual

Important info:

– This will be a position that is compatible with another part time or full time job.

– This position does not include in-studio / office work, but it will require that you be available on Saturdays (for weddings) and in the afternoons & evenings (for sessions), occasional 30-60 min client meetings over video chat or in the studio, at big team events, and regular team meetings.

– You must own your own Canon photography equipment

– Compensation for work will be a percentage rate of CBP profits on jobs you’ve worked on

– Owning your own photography business does not disqualify you from this position, but we will require a certain amount of availability for bookings with CBP.

– We are not in a rush to hire, and we won’t if we don’t find the right fit for our team.

– We will be training you to have the “Cheers Babe look,” while drawing out your personal style as a photographer. We believe that the photographer’s creative eye goes hand in hand with our streamlined processes of shooting weddings.

– If you love taking photos but hate the business side of photography, you might have just hit the jackpot!

This could be YOU!

WE ARE HIRING!

Business

Okay, if you follow us on Instagram, you guys know this news already, but if you’ve just been following along here on the blog or joined us recently we have BIG NEWS to share with you! But first, I need to introduce you to my good friend, Christa Norman.

Our first Cheers Babe Associate Wedding Photographer - Christa!

Christa & I met in college where we both studied fine art photography and became fast friends. Our friendship only deepened when we both chose to pursue wedding photography for our careers. Choosing similar paths helped us to stay in touch with one another even though both of us have moved around a bit since we were in school. Over a year ago, we were emailing about styled shoots & our thoughts on them & bouncing ideas back and forth and we realized … um, this is super useful to have someone to talk to about business and our work who totally GETS IT, let’s make it a priority! So since those emails began, the two of us started a monthly FaceTime call that we call “biz bestie” calls where we cover all sorts of topics that are affecting our businesses and lives and help keep each other accountable to our business goals. I cannot tell you how important these calls have become to me. Like, being able to be vulnerable about what’s truly going on in your business and having someone to help you problem solve & work out your ideas is truly priceless. Side note, I’ve literally been counting down the months until we both are living in SoCal so we can switch from FaceTime to in-person biz bestie time (8 more months)!!

Since this August, Christa’s been on a year-long sabbatical from wedding photography – taking a much needed break and pursuing an amazing adventure (living in Japan for the year!) with her husband, Kyle. The time away has given her lots of time to process her thoughts & feelings about her business & I’ll just go ahead and let her tell you in her own words …

From Christa:

Over the last year or so there has been a shift within me and I started to grow out of my dream of running a wedding photography business without even realizing it. It was hard to notice because I love my relationships with my couples and telling their stories. But the craft of wedding photography only makes up about 10% of actually running a wedding photography business. And this spring when I started my second business, a fine art shop (Christa Norman Studio), I realized I didn’t loathe the same business tasks when it came to my fine art shop in the way I did for wedding photography. ⠀

After moving to Japan, and having time and space to think, all of the above became very clear to me. I deeply desire to live an unhurried life. While being a wedding photographer is a beautiful and fun job it could never be described as unhurried. So I decided it was time to let go of the beautiful dream I had outgrown and forge a new path. ⠀

I am excited to be on the Cheers Babe team just get to do the part of wedding photography I love. Not to mention Jess, the owner of Cheers Babe, is one of my closest friends and has the same heart for serving couples as I do!

Oh – BTW, spoiler alert! Christa is joining the Cheers Babe team as our first Associate Wedding Photographer! (Of course you knew that from the title of this blog post😂). Early on in my business, I dreamed of one day building a team so I’d be able to serve even more wonderful couples each year. I am beyond proud to announce that my dream is beginning to come true because the ultra-talented, garden-genius, always smiling, Christa, has joined the Cheers Babe team as our first Cheers Babe Associate Wedding Photographer!

Christa is booking for late August 2020 – December 2020 couples now, so please reach out on our inquire page to chat with us about your wedding! She’ll primarily be serving our Orange County couples but is also available for travel outside of OC from time to time. Below are some samples of her BEAUTIFUL work!

Business

Today as I was sitting at my desk emailing a fellow photographer, it hit me.

I felt confident in my ability.

Not just my ability as a photographer, but as a business owner and entrepreneur. See – I spent years wondering if I would ever be able to do this for a living. I constantly compared myself to photographers who claimed to “make it overnight”, announcing they were shooting weddings & magically having a full season booked their first time trying.

This isn’t a common story, but I found myself wishing it was mine. Behind that wish was a whole lotta imposter syndrome & doubt, but something kept me pressing on. I had no idea in that moment that my life would look the way it does now. In what felt like an instant —everything changed.

3 Things that will bring you confidence in business

I look at my day-to-day life now & can see how the years I spent learning and investing in my business paid off. How important it was that I didn’t “make it overnight” because of all that I needed to learn first. It seriously feels like I blinked an eye and this happened, but I know that there are so many crucial steps along the way that led me to this assured feeling, so here is my encouragement to you if you feel like you’re in the trenches right now:

1. Keep Pressing

This may be easy to say, but take each day one day at a time. Set goals for your day, then your week, month, and then year. Take those baby steps and keep walking towards your passion.

2. Get Talking

Get out of the house! I’m serious, getting grounded in my community has been key for me. Not only for my sanity, but I’ve seen actual ROI on building sincere friendships with people who do what I do for a living. Find a great community like The Rising Tide Society’s Tuesdays Together and commit to showing up & supporting the people around you. Cheer each other on!

3. Be a Student

Learn everything you can! Invest in courses that teach on topics you are weak in, read business books, watch free webinars, listen to podcasts, attend panel discussions & just soak in the wisdom of those who have come before you. When I was feeling disappointed about my business, I used to sit in those feelings instead of getting off my butt & doing something about it. Now, I consider myself a lifelong learner & believe none of us will ever reach the point where we know everything, so keep that ego in check, sit down, be humble & learn!

I hope you feel encouraged and know that your time & effort is worth it! Do not give up!

I’m certainly cheering for you, babe!

Debra, or “Misterdebs” as she’s known on Instagram, is one of the funniest people I’ve met in a long time. She was such a hoot to have in front of the camera! I loved her personality and her obsession with color and confetti — talk about a girl after my own heart. For her branding session, we did a mix of natural light studio shots & outdoor shots, which gave her tons of variety to choose from for her site & social media!

Drumroll, please!!

It’s official! Chris is joining the Cheers Babe Team!! Woooooooo!!!!

Jess & Chris working together

It’s safe to say that I’m really excited that this day is finally here & we get to share this exciting news with you all. You may be asking, “Who is Chris?”. Chris is my handsome, creative and incredibly talented husband! He’s always been a behind the scenes business partner in a hands off kind of way. He is responsible for the major Cheers Babe visual rebrand we did almost two years ago and I constantly pester him with questions about marketing and how to handle some of the more difficult situations that come across when you run a business. He is an amazing supporter of mine and now I can’t wait to see how this business can grow with him on board in an official capacity! So, here’s Chris to introduce himself to you guys, explain why we chose to move in this direction with our business and what exactly his role is on this team.

Whoa, this is real, I can’t believe I’m writing this.

Hi, I’m Chris. I’m married to Jess and I’m the newest addition to Cheers Babe. While I’ve been with Jess on the Cheers Babe train since the beginning, for the past three years I’ve been working as an art director in advertising where I got to create digital banners, billboards, and commercials for some cool brands. During my time in the ad industry I started to learn what it takes to build a brand. But the more I worked, the more I started to wish for two things; I wanted to work on something that was mine and I wanted to hang out with Jess more. Eventually it became obvious that I should quit my comfy ad job to work with my wife and serve clients who are crazy in love.

Starting today I’ll be working as the visual director of Cheers Babe. I won’t be shooting weddings, but I’ll be responsible for making sure all things Cheers Babe look fun and beautiful. And together with Jess, we’ll both be finding ways to serve anyone who wants the best wedding photos ever. Seriously, even if you don’t choose Cheers Babe to shoot your wedding, we always want to offer something that’ll make your wedding photos your favorite photos.

The first exciting project that I’ll be working on is refreshing cheersbabephoto.com to look happier, shinier, and better than ever. This was such a fun project when I worked on it two years ago and now I can’t wait to give it some more love. Well time to get to work! I’ll see you babes around, later!

Thanks Chris! SO excited to make this official.

I can’t wait to share with you all that we’ll be working on together. We know that this path is “unconventional” for a typical “husband & wife team” in this industry and we’re okay with that, so we hope you’ll support us on our journey!
